ALPHAs Mentoring Program

ALPHAS is an evidence-based program that empowers Black and Hispanic boys and young men in Providence, Rhode Island to choose non-violence and leadership in and outside of school. The program creates intentional safe spaces to discuss pertinent issues relevant to the development of participants, share helpful strategies for navigating adolescence, and hosts programming based on best practices to improve self-esteem and advance self-efficacy. The program will focus on promoting non-violence, skill development, job training, and identity growth through mentoring and workshops.

Benefits of being an ALPHA: 

Provides participants with opportunities to visualize their futures in a variety of ways with multiple paths to success (professionally, academically, etc.) and well-being through mentor and peer relationship building, safe spaces, and practice-based workshops.

Opportunities to experience and interact with arts and culture through trips and excursions

To be eligible for the program, you or your child must be:

  • Be a male between the ages of 10 -24

  • Must be a resident of Providence, Rhode Island

  • Must complete an application

  • Commitment to the 6-month program

Become an ALPHA Mentor

The deadline for the ALPHA Mentors application is November 25, 2024, at 11:59 PM.

Role of the Mentor

  • Support young males throughout the program and provide helpful guidance on a one-on-one basis

  • Serve as a positive role model to mentees

  • Build a relationship by attending and leading sessions

  • Strive for mutual understanding and respect

  • Help establish clear SMART goals and support them as they think through the next steps/transitions

  • Help improve self-esteem, share positive encouragement and model growth

Mentor Benefits

  • $600 stipend for successful completion of mentor responsibilities

  • Personal fulfillment through mentoring

  • An opportunity to connect with a network of supportive mentors within the program

  • Attendance to mentee/mentor group activities

  • Opportunity to "pay it forward" and engage in community-oriented work that can reshape the next generation of Providence youth

  • A part of an innovative and new program centered around community building and restoration

Time Commitment

  • Make an 6-month commitment - January 2025 - June 2025

  • Attend initial two-hour training for mentors

  • Spend a minimum of 8 hours per month with the mentee

  • Communication with mentee and program personnel weekly

  • Attend support groups for mentors and training

  • Attend events for the program including Orientation and End of the Year Celebration

All qualified candidates will be invited to an in-person interview for the role of mentor.

Mentor Requirements

  • Be at least 21 years old

  • Be interested in mentoring youth of color

  • Be a resident of Providence, Rhode Island

  • Please note that all mentors will have to sign a contract confirming their commitment and will be subject to a background check given their role with minors.
